Sustainable holidays

We have not talked about sustainability for a while now, even though it is one of the issues we care about most. One of the objectives of the “Bivo project” is precisely to promote environmental sustainability. The current food model is indeed unsustainable for our planet for reasons related to the consumption of meat, the pollution of our seas or the waste of food. We have been talking about it for over two years in our blog but twenty years and thousands of articles would not be enough to explain and exhaust the topic: the Western way of life is destroying the planet that hosts us.
Being able to adopt a sustainable lifestyle involves a series of virtuous behaviors (here we have given some small examples). But a sustainable lifestyle can be adopted both during everyday life and during one’s holidays.
The first tip is to travel slow: you prefer the train to the plane (you will save on CO2 emissions) and, once you reach your destination, the bike to the bus. Avoid printing tickets, guides, etc. but use digital resources as much as possible. Using a sheet of paper to print a ticket that will be used for a fraction of a second is an extremely avoidable waste.
Wherever you go, try to choose local foods, possibly at km0 … Going a long way to eat the same products that you might find under the house makes little sense, besides being negative for the environment … Of course, if you are afraid that the food in the area may not be to your liking don’t forget to put a Bivo envelope in your suitcase … You never know
Another piece of advice to keep in mind during the summer months, whether you are at home or in any vacation spot, is to save on water and electricity consumption. During the holidays someone, with the excuse “that is free” tends to abuse it. Indeed it is a beautiful luxury but, even if not economically, at an environmental level it certainly costs us dearly.
Also the choice of the structure in which to stay deserves some attention. It is always advisable to prefer small local structures both for overnight stays and for any other service. Choosing to rely on and financially supporting those who live in the area you are visiting is definitely a way to help that area, both economically and in terms of protecting the environment … In addition to being a way to truly experience the destination you have chosen for your holiday.

In the next installment of our sustainability blog we will also give you some advice on where to go for a truly sustainable vacation. For the moment, we invite you to visit the WWF website, dedicated to adults and children.
